Islamabad 13 August: Europe is burning in 100 F heat and bracing for its most destructive wildfire season on record, and fires ravaging large parts of France, Spain, Albania, Portugal, and Greece.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System, nearly 2.4 million acres have already burned this year — more than double the usual 865,000 acres by early August — as climate change fuels hotter, drier conditions.

In Spain, close to 1,000 firefighters are battling blazes nationwide, with thousands forced to evacuate. One of the largest fires, in Tres Cantos near Madrid, scorched around 2,500 acres and claimed the life of a man who suffered severe burns, Reuters reported.
