Islamabad, Aug 15, 2025: The proposed F-9 Park cricket stadium in Islamabad has sparked strong objections from the Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP) and its Green Initiative, citing potential threats to the city’s ecological balance and public access to green spaces.

In a formal letter addressed to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the IAP clarified that while they support the growth of sports infrastructure, the chosen location in F-9 Park could compromise the park’s role as Islamabad’s “ecological lungs.” The park currently filters air, mitigates flood risks through natural drainage, sustains biodiversity, regulates temperature, and offers residents a crucial recreational area.

The organisation questioned the appointment of NESPAK for this project, noting that although the firm excels in engineering, it lacks specialised experience in urban ecological planning. The IAP urged for a transparent process to engage architects and planners with expertise in sustainable city design.

Concerns were also raised over the potential removal of mature trees and inadequate public transport connectivity, which could trigger severe traffic congestion and environmental pollution during large events. The institute warned that converting an open-access park into a ticketed venue would limit public use of Islamabad’s green spaces.

They suggested relocating the stadium to the city’s outskirts, where infrastructure can be properly developed without disturbing protected areas.

The IAP has also offered to help identify alternative locations, design environmentally conscious stadium plans, and facilitate stakeholder consultations to ensure the project aligns with Islamabad’s long-term urban planning goals.
