Islamabad, 12 June 2025: Fake Number Plates have come under increased scrutiny as Karachi’s Safe City initiative marked its first successful enforcement action under the new urban surveillance program.
Authorities confirmed that a vehicle operating within the Arambagh area was flagged for suspicious registration by the city’s newly activated camera network.
The system identified the use of Fake Number Plates, prompting a rapid police response that led to the arrest of the individual behind the wheel.
The case was formally registered at the local precinct following the vehicle’s interception, showcasing the operational readiness of Karachi’s integrated monitoring infrastructure.

Director General of the Safe City project, Asif Ijaz Sheikh, acknowledged this as the inaugural law enforcement measure since the surveillance system went live. He noted that the operation came on the heels of a high-level security meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Sindh, who also oversees internal affairs in the province.
The Chief Minister had reportedly issued clear directives to initiate proactive surveillance-based operations and demanded the full activation of all pre-installed monitoring units.
Additionally, instructions were passed down to both the Inspector General of Sindh Police and the DG Safe City to intensify efforts to tackle criminal conduct, including the widespread use of Fake Number Plates.

This development underscores a growing emphasis on data-driven policing strategies, with officials viewing such measures as a deterrent against unlawful activities, including vehicular fraud and unregistered transport use.
As surveillance continues to expand across Karachi under the Safe City banner, authorities suggest that similar operations targeting Fake Number Plates and related violations are likely to become more frequent in the coming weeks.
