Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC), one of Pakistan’s leading fertiliser producers, is planning a coal gasification project to replace natural gas. The move aims to make use of Pakistan’s vast coal reserves and reduce dependence on costly imported fuel.

The company revealed this development during its corporate briefing session held on Tuesday, which was also attended by Topline Securities. According to the brokerage’s report, FFC’s management stated that they are exploring coal gasification as a possible alternative to natural gas.

The management added that the project is still in its early phase, and no financial or operational estimates have been shared yet. Further details will be announced once there is notable progress.

Pakistan holds around 186 billion tons of coal reserves, mostly lignite, located in the Thar Desert of Sindh. These reserves place the country among the top coal-rich nations globally.

During the session, FFC officials also mentioned that the company is close to becoming fully Shariah-compliant. “Our focus remains on achieving complete Shariah compliance soon,” the management noted.

Speaking about the fertiliser industry, FFC expects urea sales to reach 6.3 million tons in 2025, with closing inventories under 1 million tons by year-end. For 2026, the company anticipates a strong recovery in the first half due to improved farm economics for major crops like wheat and cotton.

On the question of urea exports, the management clarified that there are no talks with the government regarding exports and that FFC has no such plans for now.
