Islamabad, March 19 2025: FBI Warns Free File Converters May Carry Malware Threats. For years, many people have relied on free online file converters to change formats like M4A to MP3 or convert documents and images.
However, the FBI Warns Free File Converters, stating that these seemingly convenient tools are increasingly being used to spread malware.
According to the FBI report, cybercriminals are taking advantage of file conversion needs, such as transforming a .doc to a .pdf or merging .jpeg files.
While these websites successfully convert files, they also embed hidden malware into the downloaded document, leaving users at risk.

Once installed, the malicious software can extract personal and financial information, including names, social security numbers, banking details, and cryptocurrency credentials.
In some cases, these infected files also contain ransomware, which locks a user’s data and demands payment for access.
While the FBI has not named specific infected file converters, officials emphasize the need to be cautious.
Users should avoid suspicious or unknown sites and instead rely on trusted sources for file conversions. If file conversion is a frequent requirement, investing in a verified converter could be a safer alternative.
Mark Michalek, Special Agent in Charge at FBI Denver, advised, “The best way to protect yourself from these scams is through awareness. If you or someone you know has been targeted, we encourage you to report the incident and take steps to secure your data.”
