Islamabad 15 August: Flash floods and heavy monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Pakistan’s northern regions, triggering landslides, devastating infrastructure, and claiming nearly 200 lives in a single day, government officials confirmed on Friday.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), at least 194 people have died in the past 24 hours. Fatalities were recorded across multiple provinces: 180 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), five in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and nine in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The victims include 158 men, 19 women, and 17 children, while 116 houses were damaged—ranging from partial to complete destruction—across KP, GB, and AJK.
KP bore the brunt of the disaster, with PDMA reporting nearly 146 deaths across the province within just 24 hours. Buner District emerged as the worst-hit area.
Amid relief efforts, a KP government MI-17 helicopter crashed during a mission to deliver supplies to flood-affected Bajaur. All five crew members, including two pilots, perished. The crash occurred in the Pandiyali area of Mohmand District, with Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur attributing the incident to severe weather conditions.
In response, KP government declared Saturday a provincial day of mourning, announcing that flags will fly at half-mast and the deceased will be laid to rest with full state honours. CM Gandapur mourned the fallen crew as “true heroes.”
