Islamabad, Aug 13, 2025: Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique admits the club stood behind him when he benched Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to win the UEFA Super Cup. The goalkeeper did not go with the travelling team to Udine to face Tottenham on Wednesday, Lucas Chevalier and Renato Marin were instead named.
On social media, Donnarumma wrote that he was dismayed and devastated by the ruling. Described as being at the heart of PSG reaching this year and winning the champions league last season, the 26-year-old was expected to feature but incredibly, the player was left out.
According to Enrique, the decision was brought on by the need to find a different profile in goal. That is a difficult decision. I still rate him highly but we are after a different kind of style. A few hours later, the goalkeeper raised the possibility about his future with PSG by stating that he wanted to face the fans in the eyes at Parc des Princes once last time so that he could bid farewell.

He further stated in case he could not do it, then fans would understand that their allegiance was akin to the world to him. Club captain Marquinhos commended the role played by Donnarumma with the fact that there are exits of players.
