Islamabad, Aug 10, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s promise to boost clean energy in Gilgit-Baltistan has come to fruition with the approval of a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) sanctioned the project just two days after the prime minister’s announcement, signaling swift government action towards sustainable energy solutions for the region.
The project, costing Rs24.957 billion, is set to be completed within three years, according to a press release from the PM Office Media Wing. This initiative will bring reliable solar electricity to multiple districts in Gilgit-Baltistan, enhancing energy access and supporting local development.
Gilgit-Baltistan’s districts including Astore, Daryal, Tangir, Diamer, Ghanche, Ghizer, Gilgit, Hunza, Ishkoman, Nagar, Rondu, Skardu, and Shigar will all benefit from this ambitious plan. The power distribution will be phased: Skardu will receive 18.958 MW in the first phase, Hunza, Gilgit, and Diamer will get 6.005 MW, 28.013 MW, and 13.126 MW respectively in the second phase, while the remaining districts will get 16.096 MW in the final phase.
Additionally, the project allocates 18.162 MW of off-grid electricity specifically for hospitals and government offices, ensuring critical services remain uninterrupted.
This milestone is a significant step toward the government’s clean energy goals and the economic upliftment of Gilgit-Baltistan. The project had earlier received approval from the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), reinforcing its priority status.
