Islamabad, Aug 13, 2025: Google has launched an exciting update called the Google Preferred Sources feature, currently accessible in the U.S. and India, which offers users greater control over the news articles they see on Google Search.
This innovative tool enables individuals to prioritize content from their chosen news websites and blogs, ensuring their favorite publishers appear more frequently in the Top Stories section.
How the Google Preferred Sources feature works
A star icon now appears beside the Top Stories carousel on Google Search pages. By clicking this star, users can search for and select their preferred news outlets. Once added, these sources will be prioritized, showing up more often in news results. Additionally, for some queries, Google introduces a dedicated “From your sources” section right below Top Stories, giving fast access to personalized news content.
From trial phase to widespread availability
Initially released as an experimental feature under Google Search Labs, the Google Preferred Sources feature required users to opt-in. During the pilot phase, over 50% of users chose four or more preferred news sites.
Now, Google has officially rolled out this functionality to all English-speaking users in the U.S. and India without any need for manual activation.

Advantages and considerations
The Google Preferred Sources feature is designed to keep users connected with trusted and familiar news outlets, improving the relevance of their search experience. However, some experts caution that it may reduce the diversity of viewpoints, potentially creating echo chambers. Google states its commitment to maintaining a balance between personalization and a broad range of news perspectives.
