Islamabad, May 21, 2025: Google has launched a groundbreaking AI-powered search mode that takes internet browsing to the next level—offering smarter, deeper, and more conversational results. This innovative upgrade, revealed at the tech giant’s annual I/O developer conference, positions Google to lead the generative AI race amid fierce competition from rivals like OpenAI and Apple-backed alternatives.
CEO Sundar Pichai introduced the revolutionary search experience, calling it the outcome of “decades of research.” Unlike the basic AI Overviews launched earlier, this new AI search mode integrates advanced reasoning, supports multi-modal inputs (text, images, voice), and accommodates longer, layered queries with intelligent follow-up suggestions.
“This is a total reimagining of search,” said Pichai, emphasizing how the new mode dives beyond surface-level results to offer more context and clarity. Liz Reid, head of Google Search, elaborated that the system now “searches across the entire web,” yielding deeper, more relevant content than traditional search mechanisms.
Since the rollout of AI Overviews last year, over 1.5 billion users have engaged with AI-generated search summaries, making Google Search the largest generative AI product globally. The new mode, currently available to U.S. users, aims to deepen that footprint by transforming how people interact with information online.
This bold leap comes as AI challengers like OpenAI’s ChatGPT—which now features integrated web browsing—gain ground.
Apple’s Eddy Cue testified in a federal antitrust trial that Google’s search traffic on Apple devices declined for the first time in 20 years, signaling increased adoption of AI-driven platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
However, the shift to AI-generated summaries isn’t without its critics. Digital publishers, news platforms, and Wikipedia warn that reduced click-throughs could threaten their ad revenue and sustainability.
There’s also unease about how fewer “blue link” results may undercut Google’s own advertising profits—its core business model.
Further complicating Google’s position, the ongoing antitrust trial could force structural changes in its search division after previous findings labeled it a monopoly.
Yet Google isn’t slowing down. At the I/O event, the company showcased a slew of upcoming AI tools—from live speech translation and virtual outfit try-ons to autonomous shopping assistants.
