Islamabad, Feb 20: The federal government is in the final stages of rolling out a Ramzan relief package worth over Rs. 20 billion, following the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The package aims to provide financial assistance and essential item discounts to millions of underprivileged families during the holy month.

According to sources, the prime minister has instructed that the package be presented in the next cabinet meeting for approval, after which its immediate implementation will begin. The proposed package includes direct cash assistance of Rs. 5,000 per family, benefiting 4 million deserving households. The distribution of financial aid will be based on data from the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most.

In addition to direct financial support, the government is also considering a 10-15% discount on essential food items at special Ramzan bazaars. These markets will help provide relief to a wider segment of the population by making staple goods more affordable during the fasting month.

To fund the Rs. 20 billion package, multiple government departments will contribute:

  • Ministry of Industries and Production will provide Rs. 10 billion
  • Federal Ministry of Finance will contribute over Rs. 8 billion
  • BISP will allocate Rs. 2.5 billion

Unlike previous years, the government has decided to exclude the Utility Stores Corporation from the relief package distribution. Traditionally, Utility Stores played a key role in providing subsidized food items during Ramzan, but PM Shehbaz Sharif has opted for an alternative distribution mechanism this time. The exact details of the new distribution method are yet to be disclosed.

The government has instructed all relevant ministries and institutions to finalize preparations for the package’s smooth execution. With Ramzan approaching, authorities are expected to fast-track the approval process, ensuring that financial aid and subsidies reach families well before the start of the holy month.
