Islamabad, Jan 1: The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to advocate for a reduction in mobile phone taxes to make them more affordable for the common man. However, the committee was reminded that PTA does not have the jurisdiction to lower these taxes, as this authority rests with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
During the meeting, the Secretary of IT and Telecom assured the committee that Pakistan’s internet services would improve significantly with the upcoming fiberization policy and the introduction of 5G technology. These measures are expected to enhance the quality and speed of internet services across the country, which has become crucial for both individuals and businesses.
Additionally, an official from the IT Ministry provided an update on Pakistan’s IT export performance, revealing that IT exports grew by 37 percent in 2024, reaching $3.3 billion in the first 11 months, compared to $2.4 billion in the same period of 2023. However, despite this growth, the compound annual growth rate over the last five years stood at 23 percent. The official also acknowledged that IT exports were temporarily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the recovery has been strong.
In terms of infrastructure, the Secretary of IT and Telecom announced the upcoming addition of four new submarine cables to enhance internet connectivity, with three set to be operational within a year.
Senators raised concerns about ongoing connectivity issues, particularly in regions like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where there are daily disruptions and challenges in securing mobile tower permits. They also highlighted slow internet speeds in Sindh, especially in Larkana, despite heavy investments. Chairman PTA Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman acknowledged these fiber connectivity issues in Balochistan.
In an effort to improve connectivity in underserved areas, the Secretary of IT and Telecom shared that the Universal Service Fund (USF) had allocated ₨ 3 billion for projects aimed at improving connectivity in Ex-FATA regions.
