Islamabad, Jan 28: In a recent meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Finance, Muhammad Aurangzeb, significant strides were made in the ongoing rightsizing efforts within the Federal Government. The meeting, focused on optimizing the workforce in various ministries, received a detailed presentation from the Ministry of Railways about its rightsizing initiatives.
Currently, the Ministry has 95,859 sanctioned posts, with 17,101 already abolished. Another 5,695 posts are in the process of being eliminated, and plans are in place to cut an additional 15,000 posts in the near future.
The Ministry’s rightsizing strategy aims to streamline operations, enhance resource management, and align staff numbers with the ministry’s core functions.
The move is also focused on eliminating redundancy, optimizing workforce efficiency, and ensuring that operations of Pakistan Railways are both effective and cost-efficient. The committee underscored the need for modernizing the Railways while reducing unnecessary posts, which will contribute to better service delivery.

During the meeting, the Establishment Division informed the finance minister that 29 ministries and one constitutional body had confirmed the abolition of 11,877 posts, along with 4,660 posts marked for natural expiration. The finance minister praised the proactive implementation of these decisions, recognizing the efforts of various ministries in supporting the rightsizing process.
The meeting concluded with a decision to continue the phased implementation of the rightsizing measures. The goal is to enhance the overall effectiveness of federal ministries, ensure efficient resource utilization, and promote sustainable policy outcomes across the government. As these efforts progress, the Federal Government is hopeful that the streamlined workforce will lead to long-term operational improvements and better public service delivery.
