After months of delay in approving the Power Division’s summary on revised net metering buyback rates, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the division to immediately verify the proposed new tariff in coordination with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

According to the sources, the directive was issued during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on October 22, 2025, at the Prime Minister’s Office, which was attended by key stakeholders.

The Power Division, in coordination with NEPRA, will review and verify the buyback tariff and its impact on other consumers before finalizing proposals or options for introducing net metering reforms.

The Power Division has proposed slashing the net metering buyback rate from the current Rs. 22 per unit to about Rs. 11.30 per unit, contending that the current rate places an additional financial burden on other electricity consumers.

The prime minister also instructed the division to review all contracts signed under the Net Metering Rules 2015 to assess whether the buyback rate can be legally revised without violating existing agreements.
