Islamabad, Mar 26, 2025: In a major development, Power Minister Awais Leghari has assured the nation that electricity tariffs will soon be reduced.
Addressing an event in Islamabad on Tuesday, he hinted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would deliver “good news” in the coming days regarding lower electricity prices.
Speaking at the launch of Pakistan’s first 120-kilowatt fast-charging station, Leghari dismissed rumors that power rates would remain unchanged.
His remarks come at a time when the public is eagerly awaiting relief after an expected reduction of Rs. 8 per unit was not included in the prime minister’s Pakistan Day address.
Government’s Plan for Tariff Reduction
The government has been under pressure to bring down electricity costs, especially after maintaining fuel prices on March 15.
Instead of reducing fuel rates, authorities increased the petroleum levy by Rs. 10 per liter, promising to use the financial savings to lower power tariffs.

Big Relief for EV Users
At the same event, the power minister announced a significant reduction in electric vehicle (EV) charging rates.
The per-unit cost of EV charging has been slashed from Rs. 71 to Rs. 39, making clean energy more accessible.
This move aligns with Pakistan’s broader vision of promoting sustainable energy and reducing dependency on fossil fuels.
Public-Private Collaboration in Green Energy
Leghari praised public-private partnerships for their role in driving the country toward a greener future.
He emphasized that the government is actively working to expand clean energy infrastructure and improve affordability.
The introduction of fast-charging stations and tariff reductions are key steps toward achieving these goals.
The anticipated electricity tariff cut is expected to bring much-needed relief to consumers amid rising inflation.
Additionally, the drop in EV charging costs marks a positive step in encouraging clean energy adoption in Pakistan.
With the government prioritizing energy reforms, citizens can soon expect a more affordable and sustainable power sector.
Stay tuned as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to make an official announcement soon, detailing the extent of the electricity tariff reduction.
