Islamabad, June 28, 2025: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the launch of 240 electric buses across 24 districts in South Punjab, prioritizing inclusive development across urban and rural areas.

In a high-level meeting reviewing major transport projects, CM Maryam emphasized breaking the trend of focusing development solely on major cities. “Villages deserve the same facilities as metropolitan areas,” she said, adding that all districts hold equal importance in her governance model.

The first batch of electric buses will be dispatched to underserved regions, ensuring improved public transport access. The Punjab Clean Air Programme will also deploy 400 more e-buses in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, and Nankana Sahib to combat pollution and modernize urban transit.

From August to October, an additional 500 electric buses will be launched in Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi. Another 600 units are expected to arrive by year-end, completing one of the province’s most extensive green transport rollouts.

Maryam Nawaz directed the Transport Department to fast-track all projects and finalize routes according to public demand and daily commuting patterns. She urged the use of data for optimizing routes and minimizing delays.

The meeting also reviewed the Gujranwala BRT project, which will span 22 km from Rahwali to Aimanabad, featuring 28 stations and 80 feeder buses. Four electric depots will support the network. The frequency of buses will be every eight minutes. A potential BRT extension to Gakhar Mandi is under evaluation.

In Faisalabad, two key projects—the Red Line and Orange Line—were assessed. The Red Line will stretch 23.4 km with 24 stations, serving over 185,000 passengers daily. It will now connect FIEDMC to Salami Chowk for greater industrial linkage. Meanwhile, the 29 km Orange Line, with 21 stations, aims to serve 111,000 commuters daily.
