Islamabad, Apr 20, 2025: In a transformative move for Pakistan’s transport network, the federal government has officially approved the Grand Trunk Road upgrade (GT Road), setting plans in motion to expand the N-5 highway into a consistent three-lane carriageway following the design of modern motorways.
The landmark decision came during a top-level session presided over by Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) will lead the development process, unfolding it in two separate phases, as announced.
Government sources expect the initial phase to wrap up before the end of the ongoing fiscal year.
Spanning from Karachi to Torkham, the G.T. Road (N-5) stands as the nation’s longest highway and forms a vital corridor for north-to-south commerce.
The GT Road infrastructure upgrade aims to strengthen this lifeline by enhancing traffic flow, ensuring safer travel, and reducing journey times for both private and commercial vehicles.
