Islamabad, Jan 8: The Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah regions have been witnessing heavy rain this week, with flooded areas, roads, and squares causing disruption to the smooth flow of traffic across cities.

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has reported moderate to heavy rains affecting several regions of the Kingdom, including Makkah, Madinah, Qassim, Tabuk, Northern Borders, and Al-Jouf, continuing from Sunday, January 5, through Tuesday, January 7.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has been closely monitoring the situation, lowering the alert level in Jeddah from red to orange due to moderate rain, strong winds, and high waves, warning of possible zero visibility and water accumulation.

In Madinah, Al-Shafiyah recorded the highest rainfall with 49.2 mm, while Al-Basateen district in Jeddah received the second highest at 38 mm.

Heavy Rain

The Central Haram Area at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah saw 36.1 mm of rain, with other areas, including Al-Masjid in Badr and Quba Mosque, reporting significant rainfall.

The NCM spokesperson, Hussein Al-Qahtani, emphasized caution, urging people to stay in safe places, follow advisory instructions, and monitor weather information.

The Jeddah Mayoralty has deployed teams across municipalities to manage the rainwater and ensure the safety of residents, particularly in waterlogged areas and areas with high waves.

Air carriers advised travelers to contact them for flight schedule updates at King Abdulaziz International Airport due to the rainy situation.

Torrential rainfall, hail, and dust storms are expected to continue across Makkah City, Jeddah, Bahra, and surrounding areas, while moderate to heavy rainfall will affect regions such as Taif, Maysan, and Al-Qunfudah.

The centre also warned that the storms could disrupt daily life, with possible traffic delays and flooding in affected areas.

The severe weather comes as part of a larger storm system that has already led to significant disruption in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on weather conditions.
