Islamabad, Sep 3: Former Nokia phone manufacturer HMD Global seems to be taking cues from a treasured classic: the Nokia Lumia 1020. Just as people are still drawn to vintage flip phones, so too are diehard Nokia fans to the Lumia’s unique design, especially its recognizable round camera bump.
A new Nokia model that has been leaked bears a striking resemblance to the Lumia 1020. The leaked outline reveals a large circular camera island on the back that is centered and holds four lenses as well as an LED flash. This design decision pays homage to the Lumia 1020, which is well-known for its remarkable 41MP camera sensor, which is likewise encased in a circular hump.
This is not the HMD Hyper, which resembles the Nokia Skyline in that it has a rectangular camera island. It also differs from another HMD phone that was just leaked. This Lumia-inspired model is anticipated to be positioned as a premium product, but the Hyper is said to be a more reasonably priced mid-range handset.
Although detailed details are still lacking, one important aspect is revealed by the stolen photos: a quad-camera setup.
This would be a first for HMD Global, as the Nokia Skyline (apart from versions with specialized macro lenses) had the company’s most ambitious camera setup, a triple-camera system.
Despite having a decent 108MP+50MP+13MP camera system, the Nokia Skyline is unable to match the high standard set by its Lumia predecessors in terms of mobile photography. Years of focused research and development paid off, as the Lumias were known for their remarkable image processing skills even though they had long since lost their advantage.
Replicating the software expertise that made the Lumia and PureView cameras legendary will be a significant challenge for HMD Global if it hopes to compete with today’s camera phone behemoths.
