Back in the early 2000s, mobile phones became widely accessible in Pakistan. As prices dropped and availability increased, more people started using cellular services. However, this rise also led to misuse, with unregistered SIMs being linked to illegal activities.

To address this, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) launched the SIM Information System in 2009. This system helps users verify the number of active SIMs registered against their CNIC, ensuring transparency and security.

Maximum SIMs Allowed on a CNIC

As per PTA regulations, an individual can register up to five SIM cards on a single CNIC. If you already have five and need another, you must first block an unused SIM to maintain the limit.

Checking Active SIMs on Your CNIC

If you are unsure about the number of SIMs issued under your CNIC, you can verify them using these methods:

Via PTA Website:

  1. Visit the PTA SIM Information website.
  2. Enter your CNIC number in the required field.
  3. Verify the security check and submit the form.
  4. A table will display the number of SIMs issued, categorized by operator.

Via SMS:

  1. Open your phone’s messaging app.
  2. Type your CNIC number (without hyphens) and send it to 668.
  3. You will receive a text with details of the active SIMs registered under your CNIC.

Note: Sending an SMS to 668 incurs a nominal charge.

Understanding SIM Cloning

SIM cloning involves duplicating a SIM card’s data, allowing unauthorized users to make calls under someone else’s identity. If you suspect fraudulent activity linked to your number, contact your mobile operator immediately to report and block unauthorized usage.

PTA Biometric Verification System (BVS)

The Biometric Verification System (BVS) is PTA’s initiative to enhance security by ensuring all SIM cards are verified. Through this system, you can:

  • Obtain a duplicate SIM
  • Buy or activate a new SIM
  • Change SIM ownership
  • Re-verify an existing SIM

  2. Send a blank message to 667.
  3. You will receive a response with the registered owner’s name.

Blocking an Unused SIM

If you wish to block a SIM registered under your CNIC:

  1. Visit the nearest franchise or customer service center of your mobile operator.
  2. Present your original CNIC and fill out the required form.
  3. The number will be deactivated immediately.

Using unregistered or unauthorized SIMs is illegal and may lead to legal consequences. Ensure your SIMs are registered under your CNIC and report any suspicious activity promptly to avoid potential misuse.
