An online earning site referred to as ITV has disappeared in just five months depriving the unsuspecting Pakistanis of Rs. 2.3 billion. The app also duped users by impersonating the well-known British network ITV, even though it was not associated with the network at all.

The scheme first had an enormous following as it offered easy money and urged people to invest, hoping to multiply their funds. The buzz and word of mouth marketing through social media made it sound justifiable to the people who were keen to venture into digital sources of income. But several months of successful operation and confidence in the platform later, the platform suddenly vanished and investors were devastated.

In a popular social media video, a young man is recorded outside the office of the app, standing among a big crowd of angry victims. According to him, everyone present there had been victimized and robbed of their hard-earned savings.

Pakistan has had its fair share of these online frauds in the disguise of online earning opportunities. Researchers caution that most of these plans take advantage of the urge to get easy money online without appropriate regulation. Governments are now being called upon to ensure stern action to stop such scams and guard citizens against future financial pitfalls.
