ISLAMABAD, JULY19: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly lost over USD 20 million as a result of hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 matches in the United States. This huge financial loss is anticipated to be a hot topic of conversation during the ICC Annual Conference, which gets underway in Colombo this Friday. Although the matter is not explicitly listed in the Annual General Meeting’s (AGM) nine-point agenda, it will be covered in a “post-event report.”
The defeats are a result of a number of issues related to holding part of the tournament in the United States, including the much awaited India vs. Pakistan match in New York. The probable appointment of BCCI secretary Jay Shah to succeed current ICC chairman Greg Barclay is another important subject scheduled for debate during the AGM. According to an ICC insider, there is a lot of curiosity about Shah’s expected take-over as head of the global organization.
“It is not about how, but when. According to the constitution, he has one more year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling-off period in the Indian board begins in 2025. Barclay cannot, however, serve out his third two-year term from December 2024 to December 2026 if he must assume office in 2025, the ICC source said Press Trust of India (PTI).
The ICC chairmanship tenure could be changed from three terms of two years each to two periods of three years, with a six-year cumulative term still being examined as a potential alternative. With this modification, Shah would be able to serve as BCCI secretary till the end of his term and take on the chairmanship of the ICC for a three-year period in 2025, which coincides with his cooling-off period from the BCCI. He might then make a comeback and assume the presidency of the BCCI in 2028.
