Islamabad, Dec 21: South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has faced disciplinary action following an emotional outburst during the second ODI against Pakistan. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Klaasen has been fined 15% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This regulation addresses “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
The incident unfolded during the high-stakes match when Klaasen, after being dismissed for a valiant 97 off just 74 balls, kicked the stumps in frustration. His innings had been a beacon of hope for South Africa as they attempted to chase down a daunting target of 330. Klaasen’s dismissal in the 43rd over marked the end of the team’s resistance, with South Africa eventually falling 81 runs short of the target.
Match Referee Richie Richardson imposed the penalty, citing Klaasen’s reaction as a clear violation of the code of conduct. The ICC emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and respect for the game, particularly in moments of high tension.
Pakistan’s victory in the match secured them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, leaving South Africa with only pride to play for in the final ODI scheduled for Sunday, December 22, in Johannesburg.
