On Monday, Polish tennis sensation Iga Swiatek set another achievement in her career, winning her first Cincinati Open after defeating the seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini 7-5 6-4. Having lost the first set 0-3, world No. 2 fought back and turned the game around in slightly less than two hours to emerge as the first Polish player in the Open Era era to win the singles trophy at the event.
It is her 24th career singles title on the WTA circuit, and 11th at the top-tier WTA 1000. This is also her second title of the 2025 season as she won Wimbledon only one month ago. Swiatek expressed that it was her team that made her acclimatise to quicker surfaces by saying she was shocked and so happy at the accomplishment.
Paolini made a good start but failed to continue her battles after good victories over Coco Gauff and Barbora Krejcikova to reach the final. Although he managed to serve out the Polish well before the second set was completed, the Italian was unable to fend off the effectiveness of his opponent, and in the end lost his fifth match to the Pole in his whole career. The second place finish, however, elevates Paolini into the Top 10 of the world rankings for the first time hence he is assured of the top-eight seeding in the US Open.
