Islamabad, 14 May, 2025: The DP World International League T20 (ILT20) will shift its fourth season to a new December-January window, moving away from its traditional start-of-the-year slot.

The adjustment comes as organisers aim to steer clear of the congested January-February cricket calendar.

They also want to ensure the tournament concludes well ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for February-March 2026.

The 2025 edition of the UAE-based franchise league is set to begin on December 2 — coinciding with the country’s National Day — and will run until January 4, 2026.

This strategic move is expected to reduce overlaps with other major T20 leagues such as South Africa’s SA20 and Bangladesh’s BPL.

However, some overlap with Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) will still remain.

ILT20 CEO David White explained that the decision was made after in-depth consultation with various stakeholders.

He noted that wrapping up the tournament before the global T20 event would give participating players ample time to prepare for international duty.

White also pointed out that the revised schedule would give franchises a better chance to recruit from a wider pool of international talent.

While it remains to be seen whether this shift becomes permanent, officials appear optimistic about the new window.

Khalid Al Zarooni, chairman of ILT20 and vice-chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board, expressed pride in launching the new season on a day of national significance.

He described the timing as a tribute to the country’s diverse population and passionate cricket following.

Since its inception, the ILT20 has featured six teams. Gulf Giants, MI Emirates, and Dubai Capitals have each lifted the trophy once in the league’s first three seasons.
