Islamabad, 28 May 2025: Pakistan’s J-35A addition to its air fleet has intensified regional security dynamics, prompting India to fast-track its own stealth fighter jet programme.

The Indian government has now greenlit a comprehensive strategy to develop an indigenous fifth-generation twin-engine stealth aircraft.

India Responds to Pakistan’s Air Power Boost

Pakistan’s J-35A induction into the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) was seen as a strategic move to enhance its aerial superiority.

In response, India has tasked its Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) with spearheading the new fighter jet initiative.

The ADA is expected to open bids soon, inviting defence manufacturers to contribute to the design and production of a prototype aircraft.

This step comes as India tries to close the gap in aerial capabilities with regional rivals. While the Indian Air Force (IAF) operates 31 squadrons far short of the sanctioned strength of 42 Pakistan continues to reinforce its fleet with Chinese-origin platforms like the J-10 and Pakistan’s J-35A.

Combat Pressure Mounts on Indian Forces

The urgency of the programme is underlined by recent military engagements. During a four-day conflict earlier this month, the PAF reportedly used J-10 jets in operational scenarios against India’s Rafale fighters.

Following that exchange, PAF leadership claimed a significant advantage in the air, asserting a 6-0 outcome in their favour.

India’s new plan allows both private and state-run companies to participate individually or through partnerships, marking a shift towards reducing reliance on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The initiative follows defence committee recommendations issued in March, calling for broader industrial involvement in combat aircraft development.

With China continuing to scale up its aerial fleet and Pakistan’s J-35A entering service, New Delhi is now under pressure to modernize its air capabilities swiftly and decisively.
