New Delhi, July 23, 2025: India will resume issuing tourist visas for Chinese nationals from July 24, ending a nearly five-year freeze imposed after clashes between soldiers from the both nations in June 2020.

The visa suspension was part of wider measures India took following the deadly clashes in Galwan Valley which left 20 Indian soldiers dead. The South Asian nation imposed restrictions on Chinese investments and bans on several popular Chinese apps, aiming to curb China’s influence in the country.

The decision to reopen tourist visas hints at a broader effort by India to ease tensions after years of strained diplomatic relations.

Chinese nationals will need to apply online and submit biometrics at Indian visa application centers located in major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

While trade between India and China remains substantial – over $127 billion – the renewed visa facility is expected to support tourism and cultural ties.
