Islamabad, 24 May 2025: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is gearing up to initiate construction on the much anticipated New Underpass Project at Shaheen Chowk, a vital move aimed at easing heavy traffic flow near Islamabad’s key educational belt.
The new infrastructure is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of commuters particularly students, university staff, and local residents who face daily congestion near major academic institutions.
Construction Set to Begin Soon
According to a statement by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the planning and design phase of the New Underpass Project is nearing its conclusion.
He noted that the project is being prioritised because of the critical traffic issues in areas surrounding several universities.

The minister added that once operational, the underpass would drastically reduce delays and improve the daily commute for thousands.
Officials within CDA have confirmed that this initiative forms part of a broader urban development strategy to modernise Islamabad’s transport infrastructure.
The underpass will link important sectors and facilitate smoother travel across busy corridors of the capital.
Part of a Wider Transport Revamp
Urban planning experts have highlighted that this project reflects a continued push by the federal capital to upgrade its road networks.
It follows the successful delivery of the Jinnah Square underpass on Murree Road completed in a record time of just 35 days which now provides seamless connectivity between Murree Road and Srinagar Highway.
Sources familiar with the matter suggested that similar efficiency is being targeted for the Shaheen Chowk project.
