Islamabad, Sep 30: IPL to Ban Overseas Players Who Leave Tournament for National Duties.Foreign players who withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being selected in the auction without a good reason would be barred from the league for two years by the IPL governing council.
This move is a reaction to the IPL franchises’ persistent complaints about last-minute withdrawals that interfere with their efforts to assemble their squads. The franchises were informed of the new regulation via a document that contained the most recent retention guidelines.
In order to prepare for the 2024 T20 World Cup, a number of English players made the decision earlier this year to leave the IPL and play for their country, taking part in a home series against Pakistan. Indian media and IPL owners were incensed by this.
If a player withdraws after being selected, they will not be allowed to participate in the IPL or any subsequent IPL auctions for two seasons, unless they have a valid medical reason that their home cricket board must vouch for.
All ten IPL clubs made a request during a meeting with the IPL governing council in July, which served as the impetus for this new policy. Teams vented their irritation at having to scramble to fill holes in their squads due to unexpected withdrawals of overseas players, particularly after making significant auction-process investments in certain players.
Apart from tackling the pullout problem, the IPL has modified the auction procedure to restrict the amount of money that foreign players can obtain through mini-auctions. Going forward, the higher retention price or the lower of the two will be the maximum auction price for foreign participants in these smaller auctions.
