Islamabad, July 23, 2025: The Excise and Taxation Department of Islamabad has launched a rigorous citywide crackdown on unauthorized, fancy, and modified number plates in an effort to standardize vehicle registration and boost public safety.
According to official sources, Director General Irfan Memon has instructed field teams to intensify their operations, warning that any vehicle caught with non-standard or personalized number plates will face on-the-spot impoundment and hefty fines.
Only plates issued directly by the Islamabad Excise Department are deemed valid under current traffic regulations.
“No vehicle is allowed to display fancy plates with stylized fonts, names, or emblems,” DG Memon stated. “Our teams will ensure full compliance without exception.”
Citywide Enforcement Underway
Inspection squads have already been mobilized across major sectors, roads, and commercial areas. These teams are actively pulling over vehicles and checking their registration plates for compliance. Those found violating the rules are either fined or have their vehicles impounded until they revert to official number plates.
Officials say the campaign’s primary goal is to assist law enforcement and surveillance systems in vehicle tracking. Non-standard plates not only hinder automated systems like ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) but also pose a security risk during investigations.

Security and Law Compliance at Core
A senior official remarked that many vehicle owners tend to install decorative plates featuring their names, logos, or unique stylizations. While seemingly harmless, such plates interfere with identification processes at checkpoints and during emergency situations.
“These illegal plates may look stylish, but they are a serious breach of traffic law and a threat to citywide security protocols,” the official emphasized.
Public Advisory and Awareness Drive
To ensure compliance, a public awareness campaign is also underway. The Excise Department is urging residents to immediately replace unauthorized plates with official ones to avoid legal trouble. Social media messages, public service announcements, and traffic updates are being used to reach the public.

Penalties and Legal Action for Repeat Offenders
DG Irfan Memon warned that repeated violations could result in legal prosecution under vehicle registration laws. “There will be zero tolerance for continued misuse of number plates,” he affirmed.
The Excise Department encourages all vehicle owners to visit their nearest office or the official website to verify the legitimacy of their registration plates. Standard plates must match the prescribed font, size, color, and format, with no room for alterations.
