Islamabad — August 4, 2025: Following the recent shutdown of brick kilns to combat air pollution, Islamabad’s administration has intensified its anti-smog efforts by launching a city-wide crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles.

As part of this initiative, free vehicle emission testing is being offered at three designated locations until August 31, 2025. These sites include the Old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Excise and Taxation Office. The campaign, which commenced on July 15, aims to improve air quality and promote environmentally responsible driving practices among residents.

Vehicles manufactured in 2021 or later are currently exempt from testing in the initial phase of the drive. However, both private and commercial vehicles older than this threshold are required to undergo emissions testing using equipment that meets international environmental standards. Compliant vehicles will receive a barcode sticker on their windscreen as proof of passing the test.

According to officials, 2,778 vehicles have been inspected during the first two weeks of the campaign, with 2,665 vehicles successfully meeting the prescribed emission standards.

Starting September 1, 2025, Islamabad’s administration will end the free testing service and begin imposing substantial fines on vehicles found emitting visible smoke within city limits. Authorities have warned that smoke-emitting vehicles will be strictly barred from entering Islamabad, and violators will face heavy penalties as part of the enforcement drive.

Many citizens have expressed their support for the initiative, urging authorities to further expand the number of emission testing centers to reduce long queues and waiting times.
