Islamabad, Feb 10: At the LEAP 2025 conference, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Pakistan’s Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunication, underscored the critical need for ethical AI governance, robust data security, and digital inclusivity during her participation in the DCO Ministerial Panel titled “Shaping the Future of Ethical AI: Multilateral Perspectives on Governance and Risk Management.” The panel was hosted by H.E. Deemah Al Yahya, Secretary General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), and brought together global leaders to discuss responsible AI implementation.

Minister Shaza emphasized the transformative potential of AI but stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation and strong regulatory frameworks to ensure that AI benefits all segments of society. She highlighted key areas such as data privacy, security, and fairness, advocating for global collaboration to create AI governance models that prevent discrimination and promote equal digital opportunities.

A major focus of her speech was on bridging the digital divide in developing nations. Minister Shaza called for inclusive policies and capacity-building initiatives to ensure that the benefits of AI reach underserved communities. She argued for AI as a tool of social empowerment that can create an equitable and sustainable digital future, not just drive economic growth.

On the issue of sustainability, she urged for environmentally responsible AI development, stressing the need to minimize AI’s carbon footprint. She reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability on digital platforms, advocating for a global framework to deploy AI ethically while fostering innovation.

Regarding Pakistan’s approach to AI, Minister Shaza highlighted the government’s efforts to develop a comprehensive AI policy that balances technological advancement with ethical considerations. She emphasized that AI in Pakistan will be used to enhance public services, drive economic growth, and support a sustainable digital ecosystem.

In her conclusion, Shaza called for greater international cooperation to shape an inclusive, transparent, and accountable AI-powered future. She urged all stakeholders including governments, businesses, and technology leaders to work together to create global ethical frameworks for AI that foster innovation, stability, and sustainable progress.
