ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 1: The steering committee, which was established to address the purported financial leniency extended to long-distance and international (LDI) corporations, has been dissolved by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
After the ministry decided to revoke a prior letter that had awarded LDI firms privileges totaling billions of rupees, the steering group was created to handle the issue of arrears affecting these companies.
Together with current members from the IT ministry and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the committee included representatives from each of the nine LDI businesses. The ministry will now make a decision on the specific issue.
According to sources who spoke with Bloom Pakistan, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has received the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) response to the issue.
The telecom regulator responded by stating that the absence of a federal policy direction prevented it from collecting money owed from LDI operators.
The PTA stated that in addition to providing the LDI enterprises with other ways to pay the outstanding debts, it had also sent letters to them. Furthermore, PTA stated that it was unable to recover the outstanding debts owing to legal actions filed by LDI firms.
