Islamabad, June 25, 2025: In a major boost to Pakistan’s mining sector, Japanese industrial giant Komatsu has inked a $440 million deal with Barrick Gold Corporation to deliver ultra-class mining equipment for the world-renowned Reko Diq copper-gold project in Balochistan.

The agreement marks Komatsu’s first large-scale deployment of mining machinery in Pakistan and is part of a global partnership with Barrick, originally signed in October 2023. The collaboration extends the companies’ cooperation from projects in Zambia and the United States to now include Pakistan’s mineral-rich frontier.

As part of the agreement, Komatsu will establish a dedicated local entity—Komatsu Pakistan Mining (SMC-Private) Limited—to provide continuous equipment support and advanced on-site technical services. This move will also create skilled job opportunities for Pakistanis and introduce high-end mining technology to the country.

The five-year supply plan includes state-of-the-art Komatsu machinery such as:

  • 980E-5 electric haul trucks (assembled in Illinois, USA)
  • P&H electric rope shovels (from Wisconsin, USA)
  • PC7000-11 hydraulic excavators (from Germany)
  • WE2350-2 wheel loaders (manufactured in Texas, USA)

Located in Chagai district near the Iran-Afghanistan border, Reko Diq is one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world. Barrick Gold owns 50% of the project, while the remaining share is equally divided between the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Balochistan.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with commercial production targeted for 2028. Once operational, the project will significantly increase foreign direct investment, improve Pakistan’s natural resource exports, and support local economic growth.
