Islamabad, July 1, 2025: In a major development, the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology has officially been renamed as the Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, marking a new chapter in Punjab’s healthcare system.

Punjab Health Minister Khwaja Salman Rafique confirmed on Monday that the renaming reflects the facility’s independent identity. “It no longer functions as an extension of Jinnah Hospital Lahore,” he said during a televised interview.

The newly named institute will now operate as an autonomous entity, free from the administrative control of Jinnah Hospital. This decision aligns with the provincial government’s broader strategy to enhance specialized medical care by establishing independent centers.

The original plan for the cardiology institute was announced by then-chief minister Mohsin Naqvi in October 2023. The facility was built next to the Jinnah Hospital and initially operated under its supervision.

With the rebranding, the Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases aims to deliver high-standard cardiac treatment, equipped with modern technology and skilled professionals.

The move also signals the government’s intention to honor political leadership while improving health services. The decision has stirred public debate, but officials maintain the focus remains on medical excellence and service delivery.
