Islamabad, Jan 8: On Tuesday, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) made a significant announcement that will bring a bit of relief to electricity consumers. The authority notified a decrease in the power tariff for consumers across various power distribution companies (DISCOs) and K-Electric. The tariff reduction for DISCOs and K-Electric Consumers will stand at 75 paisa and 49 paisa per unit, respectively, as part of the monthly fuel adjustment (FCA) mechanism.
This decision was made after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), representing the DISCOs, had submitted a petition to the power regulator, requesting a 63 paisa per unit decrease in the FCA for November 2024. Similarly, K-Electric Consumers had sought a 27 paisa reduction in the October tariff. However, the regulator slashed the tariffs to 75 paisa and 49 paisa, reflecting a favorable outcome for consumers. This relief, as per the notification, will apply to all eligible consumers, offering minor but notable savings in their January 2025 billing cycle.
Relief Details for Various Consumer Categories
A reduction in electricity tariffs will be applicable across different consumer categories, with notable exclusions such as lifeline consumers, domestic consumers using up to 300 units, and certain specialized consumers like those with Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) or Prepaid electricity consumers. The agriculture consumers of all XWDISCOs will also benefit, provided they are not in the excluded groups.
However, the negative adjustment under the monthly FCA will still apply to domestic consumers with Time of Use (ToU) meters, irrespective of their consumption level. XWDISCOs are set to reflect this fuel charges adjustment for November 2024 in the January 2025 billing month, ensuring that the adjustment is properly accounted for across the board, making the tariff relief more effective for the broader public.
