Karachi, Pakistan – August 19, 2025: Authorities in Sindh province have declared an emergency in Karachi following severe flash floods caused by heavy monsoon rains. At least seven people have died in separate incidents across the city.
The downpour on Tuesday brought life to a standstill in the metropolis of over 20 million. Floodwaters inundated major roads, submerged vehicles, and entered homes in low-lying neighborhoods, triggering widespread power outages. Many commuters were stranded as streets became impassable.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) announced a “Rain Emergency” and directed municipal services, fire brigades, and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams to establish a Rain Emergency Cell and coordinate with essential services.
The Sindh provincial education department announced that all schools and colleges in Karachi would remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, due to the severe weather.

Hassaan Khan, spokesperson for Sindh Rescue 1122, said rescue teams were working across the city to respond to rain-related emergencies. Fatalities included four people in Gulistan-e-Jauhar due to a house wall collapse, a child in Orangi in a similar incident, and two others in North Karachi and Defence areas due to electrocution.
Since June, over 700 people have died nationwide due to the ongoing monsoon season. Authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rainfall and flooding are expected to continue.
