Islamabad, Dec 16: Karachi experienced a chilly night on Sunday as the minimum temperature dropped to 8.9°C, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Jinnah Terminal recorded Karachi’s lowest temperature at 8.9°C, while Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Shahrah-e-Faisal noted 10.5°C and 11.5°C, respectively. Mauripur experienced slightly warmer conditions at 12.5°C. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted cold and dry weather, with daytime temperatures peaking at 27°C. Northeast winds at 7 km/h and 50% humidity were also reported.
However, Karachi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 183, indicating unhealthy conditions. Icy winds from Balochistan made temperatures feel 2–4 degrees lower than recorded.
Severe Cold in Northern Pakistan
Northern Pakistan is enduring extreme cold, with Leh recording the lowest temperature at -13°C in the past 24 hours. Other areas such as Skardu registered -7°C, Kalam -6°C, and Islamabad -1°C. Peshawar, Lahore, and Multan observed minimum temperatures of 3°C and 7°C, respectively.
Heavy snowfall covered Gilgit-Baltistan, while northern Balochistan faced a harsh cold wave. Quetta recorded -6°C, with Kalat and Ziarat at -5°C. The PMD warned of continuing cold weather across many regions, particularly in Islamabad and its surroundings.
