On Thursday, Karachi schools and colleges will remain closed a second consecutive day as relentless torrential rain throws the routine of the metropolis out of gear. Sindh Education Department issued a notification that it has suspended all academic activity in all state and non-state institution institutions.

The notification said, that all schools in Karachi will be closed tomorrow because of the current weather conditions. Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) has also shutdown on-campus sessions on August 21, and adding that online lectures and academic activities would be continued under supervision. No examination shall take place as scheduled and further instructions will be issued later.

Though the province government had earlier announced a public holiday in the whole city citing massive rainstorms on August 20. Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted that there will be more rainfall in Karachi where they have warned of thunderstorms and catastrophic urban flooding in low-lying regions. Other areas such as districts like Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas will also experience a lot of rainfall but by tonight the weather phenomenon could start waning.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) projected that 50-100 millimetres of rainfall can be experienced within a short period introducing high chances of flooding because of the poor drainage system in the city. Floods are feared along Thatta, Badin, Jamshoro and Dadu and the increase in levels of the Indus River threatens the villages along the river.

Senior government officials have asked people to be on their toes as schools and universities in Karachi will have to be closed until the situation comes under control.
