Islamabad, Dec 26: The ongoing cold wave in Karachi is expected to intensify further in the second week of January 2025, as indicated by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz, during a local news interview, warned of a further drop in Karachi’s temperatures throughout January.
He also highlighted the possibility of light rain in parts of Balochistan from January 3 to 5, but noted that the country is expected to experience lower-than-average snowfall and rainfall this winter.
Karachi has already seen single-digit temperatures multiple times this month, and the cold wave is affecting many other regions nationwide. In Balochistan, temperatures have dropped below freezing in several areas.
The PMD predicts predominantly cold and dry weather across most of the country, with particularly cold conditions expected in hilly regions during the mornings and nights. Light rain and snow are likely in Kashmir and nearby hilly regions in the evenings and nights.
Additionally, smog is expected to persist in isolated plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during mornings and nights, while frost may develop in parts of Islamabad, the Pothohar region, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the early hours.
Extreme cold was recorded in various areas over the past 24 hours, with Skardu hitting -11°C, Astore and Gupis at -8°C, Gilgit at -7°C, Quetta and Ziarat at -6°C, and Hunza, Bagrote, and Dir at -5°C. As temperatures continue to drop, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the severe cold and prepare for the worsening weather conditions.
