Islamabad, June 26, 2025: The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) is actively monitoring recent seismic activity. This activity is being felt in Karachi and the surrounding areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated that the NSMC has recorded 57 low-magnitude tremors. These occurred in Karachi since June 1, 2025.
These quakes have ranged from 1.5 to 3.8 on the Richter scale. They are attributed to the activation of the Landhi Fault Line. PMD experts explained that this unusually high frequency. reflects a natural release of tectonic stress. This occurs within the region’s fault system. Experts further said that these tremors are minor and commonplace. This is normal in active seismic zones. Most of these jolts have occurred at shallow depths, up to 70km.

These earthquakes result from natural tectonic movements. They occur along local fault systems in the region, experts said. Karachi lies near the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Here, small-scale stress accumulation. can occasionally lead to such minor seismic releases. Experts reiterated that these are considered normal geological phenomena. They occur in tectonically active zones. They do not indicate an impending major earthquake.
At this stage, based on data and observed patterns, no immediate threat of a major earthquake has been identified. Experts reiterated this point. Local conditions may also influence. how the shocks are felt at the surface. These include soft soil, land reclamation, and unregulated groundwater extraction.
The PMD team is continuously analyzing seismic data. This is to ensure any unusual activity is detected in real-time. The public is strongly advised not to panic. PMD stated that these tremors are not unusual. They should not be a cause for fear.
