Islamabad, 28 May 2025: In anticipation of the approaching rainy season, the Sindh administration has implemented a two-month prohibition on waste dumping into Karachi’s stormwater drains. The initiative, which underscores the seriousness of ‘Waterlogging During Monsoon’, seeks to avoid water overflows and sanitation crises typically triggered by obstructed drainage networks.
The restriction, introduced by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, bars the disposal of garbage, construction debris, solid waste, and similar materials into the city’s drainage system.
Law enforcement has been instructed to take firm action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code against anyone found violating the directive.

Second Ban in 2025 Signals Growing Concern
This is the second such restriction imposed this year. A comparable directive was issued in March 2025, reflecting rising concern among city officials about the worsening effects of ‘Waterlogging During Monsoon’.
At that time, authorities had also appealed to both public and private entities, including independent bodies, to contribute to keeping the urban environment clean and the drainage channels unobstructed.
The move forms part of a wider strategy to enhance urban flood management and public health safety during Karachi’s unpredictable monsoon months.
Karachi Port Trust Issues Monsoon Safety Advisory
In a related development, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has circulated a monsoon readiness bulletin, released on May 26.
The advisory contains a series of operational safeguards intended to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions.

Among the steps recommended are keeping ship safety protocols active, tightening mooring arrangements, preparing backup power supplies, and moving smaller vessels to areas shielded from turbulent waters and high winds. Port pilots have also been instructed to stay on standby throughout the season.
These combined measures by the city government and KPT reflect a growing recognition of the risks posed by ‘Waterlogging During Monsoon’, and mark a more coordinated effort to reduce disruptions during heavy rains.
