Islamabad, May 3, 2025: Karachi is bracing for its biggest academic challenge of the year as over 126,500 intermediate students gear up for the 2025 annual exams starting Monday, May 5.
With scorching temperatures expected and 36 exam centres marked “highly sensitive,” the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) is rolling out strict security and health measures to ensure smooth, fair exams.
This year’s exams will run until May 29, split across morning (9 am–12 pm) and evening (2 pm–5 pm) sessions.
The majority — over 92,000 Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, and Home Economics students — will test in the morning, while around 34,500 General Science candidates sit in the evening
To safeguard the integrity of the exams, BIEK has set up 182 centres citywide, with 36 classified as highly sensitive due to past irregularities or logistical concerns.
Two central monitoring cells, housed at the Karachi Commissioner’s Office, will directly coordinate with complaint cells placed in each district — a move experts say reflects growing concerns over exam-time cheating and disruptions.
What’s drawing special attention this year is the heatwave forecast during exam weeks.
Unlike past years, the board has proactively requested ambulances from Sindh Emergency & Rescue Service 1122 and first aid support from the Sindh Health Department.

Comparatively, many other provinces have yet to implement such detailed heatwave contingency plans, putting Karachi ahead in student safety preparedness.
Education analyst Dr. Asad Rahim told us, “It’s encouraging to see Karachi prioritize both fairness and student health. Other boards should follow this example, especially in extreme weather.”
As Karachi’s students prepare for these critical exams, parents, teachers, and the public all play a role in supporting them through this intense period.
