Islamabad, July 16, 2025: The Karakoram Highway (KKH) between Kohistan and Gilgit has been closed due to massive landslides following intense rainfall in the region. The disruption began on Sunday, cutting off road connectivity between Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, halting both travel and trade.
In a small relief, the Karakoram Highway, which had also been blocked at Tatta Pani due to a landslide, has been partially reopened for one-way traffic. Goharabad Police confirmed that debris was cleared with the help of heavy machinery, but full restoration is expected to take more time.
Meanwhile, heavy rain continues in the upper mountainous regions of Diamer and Kohistan. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings for further rainfall and a heightened risk of new landslides. Flash floods have also washed away several link roads on the outskirts of Diamer, causing severe difficulties for local residents already struggling with mobility and access to essentials.
Despite the deployment of heavy machinery, the clearance process has been slow due to ongoing rains. A spokesman for NHA urged the public to avoid travel on the KKH until further notice. The Frontier Works Organization (FWO), NHA, and local authorities are working jointly to restore the route.
