Islamabad, Aug 13, 2025: Flooding in Hunza River has caused severe destruction in Gulmit, Gojal, forcing the closure of the Karakoram Highway for all vehicles since yesterday.

The RCC bridge in Gulmit is buried under flood debris, leaving travelers stranded on both sides of the Pakistan-China Khunjerab border crossing.

Two excavators from the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) are working to restore the highway. Locals in Gulmit are assisting stranded passengers, guiding them across a temporary bridge and even carrying weak or sick travelers on their backs to help them cross safely.

Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesman Faizullah Firaq confirmed that more than 50 workers narrowly escaped the flooding in Gulmit and Gojal, with landslides striking Shahrah-e-Resham. Floodwater has also hit Shigar in Baltistan, damaging farmland and uprooting trees.
