Islamabad, June 30, 2025: A new 62-kilometer section of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) is set to open by 2026, ensuring year-round travel despite landslides or floods. The route is part of the Dasu hydropower project and is being constructed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
According to project GM Amir Shafique, the alternative KKH stretch—from Kamila Bazaar to Summer Nullah—will feature 15 tunnels and 9 arch bridges, bypassing dangerous curves and risky terrain. This modern road will replace the existing highway, which will be submerged once the Dasu dam is filled.
Construction is progressing steadily. Major bridges at Louter, Ocher Nullah, Barseen, and Dogah are at advanced stages. Once complete, the road will connect with the Hazara Expressway at Thakot, forming a dual-carriageway capable of handling all traffic types safely and efficiently.
