Pakistan first tunnel boring sewerage project has been approved for Lahore, aiming to modernize the city’s drainage system without disturbing daily life. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has given the green signal for the initiative.
A 32-kilometre sewerage line will be laid from Larex Colony to Gulshan-e-Ravi, offering a permanent solution for water drainage in central Lahore.
According to senior WASA officials, nearly 2.5 million people will directly benefit once the project is completed. They described it as a game changer for the city’s sewerage system.
Construction work is expected to begin soon, with pipes produced through advanced vertical spinning technology, which ensures a lifespan of around 100 years.

Officials confirmed that after completion, more than 22 lift stations will be shut down as the new system takes over. The plan has been designed by the US-based firm EBA Engineering. The tunnel will connect to the Babu Sabu Wastewater Treatment Plant and is scheduled for completion by June 2028.
