Islamabad, Aug 13, 2025: Lahore biogas production is set to receive a major boost as the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) launches an innovative project to turn slaughterhouse waste into affordable renewable energy. Instead of dumping thousands of tonnes of animal waste into landfills daily, the company will now convert it into biogas under its Waste to Value Project.

LWMC spokesperson Omar Chaudhry said the company has already tested biogas generation from animal remains, producing 25,000 kilograms per day during trials. The goal is to process 1,000 tonnes of offal, intestines, and dung daily, transforming it into energy and reducing environmental impact.

The initiative is expected to create 275,000 tonnes of carbon credits and earn around $4.2 million annually by rehabilitating an old waste site. Built at a cost of Rs. 3 million, the facility will use anaerobic digesters to break down the waste. Alongside energy production, the plant will also produce organic fertilizer for home gardens and landscaping.

According to the spokesperson, similar Lahore biogas production plants could be set up in other districts under the Suthra Punjab campaign. Lahore’s slaughterhouse network includes both public and 11 private facilities registered with the Pakistan Halal Council, as well as a large meat processing complex run by the Punjab Agriculture and Meat Company in Shahpur Kanjran.
