Islamabad (June 28, 2025): In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at combating severe air pollution and improving urban living, the Punjab government has launched a comprehensive campaign to transform Lahore into Pakistan’s first “dust-free city.” This ambitious plan involves not only stricter environmental regulations but also a concerted effort towards sustainable and organized urban development.
Lahore, often grappling with hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) levels, particularly due to construction dust, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollutants, is now at the forefront of a major environmental cleanup.
During a recent visit to the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) headquarters, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, received a detailed briefing from LDA Director General Tahir Farooq on ongoing and proposed development projects.
Mengal underscored the critical need for all departments involved in development work to adhere to uniform standards. He emphasized that environmental sustainability would be the paramount priority in all future urban development efforts.

Mengal highlighted that inconsistent development standards and poorly designed commercial properties have long diminished Lahore’s aesthetic appeal and contributed to environmental degradation.
He stressed that new legislation would be introduced to specifically regulate the external designs of commercial properties, aiming for visual coherence and eco-friendly expansion.
A unified strategy, with consistent development protocols across all departments, is being pursued to ensure sustainable and organized urban growth.
The LDA Director General also shared significant progress updates. Property records in Lahore have been fully digitized, and building plans can now be approved online, streamlining processes for citizens.

In a historic financial achievement, the LDA’s revenue generation has for the first time crossed Rs. 25 billion. Furthermore, a massive 990 kanals of prime land, valued at billions of rupees, have been successfully recovered from illegal encroachments.
To ensure ongoing compliance and efficient management, LDA-controlled areas are now being rigorously monitored through a dedicated digital monitoring unit.
In a move to further enhance urban mobility and sustainability, representatives from NESPAK also presented the proposed plan for the Yellow Line Bus Service during the crucial meeting.
It signifies a broader integrated approach to Lahore’s urban future. This initiative to make Lahore a Dust-Free City promises to make Lahore a healthier, more beautiful, and well-managed metropolis.
