The Punjab government has announced plans to launch the Lahore Electric Tram Service starting February next year. Transport Minister Bilal Akbar said the initial trial was successful, paving the way for the new line connecting Thokar to Harbanspura.
Each tram will carry up to 270 passengers, with the project costing around $3 million. Officials from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority recently visited China to finalize technical details.
Bilal Akbar also shared that metro train services are being planned for Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad Metro is expected to serve 300,000 daily commuters, while the Gujranwala Metro will accommodate 140,000 passengers per day. The Faisalabad project is estimated at $110 million, and Gujranwala at $50 million.

The minister highlighted that increasing pollution from motorcycles and other vehicles in Lahore is a major concern. The new tram and metro services are part of the government’s plan to reduce environmental impact and offer convenient public transport options.
